Moscow Black Ribbon Fancy Guppies (Poecilia reticulata var. “Moscow Black Ribbon”) are a captivating selectively bred variant of the classic Black Moscow guppy strain, renowned among aquarists for their dramatic, velvety jet-black coloration combined with elegant, elongated ribbon-style fins that create a graceful, flowing silhouette in the aquarium.

Unlike standard Black Moscow guppies, which often feature more traditional delta or veil tails, the Black Ribbon variant emphasizes smooth, extended ribbon-like dorsal and caudal fins (sometimes referred to as “long-ear” or ribbon-tail genetics), giving males an especially refined and luxurious appearance. High-grade specimens display a solid, deep midnight-black body with a subtle iridescent or velvety sheen that subtly shifts under aquarium lighting — often appearing almost metallic or velour-like — while the ribbon fins extend dramatically, adding movement and sophistication without heavy patterning or color breaks. Females tend to carry a slightly softer black-gray tone and show more rounded bodies, though they still maintain impressive fin extension in quality lines.

These peaceful, active livebearers reach an adult size of about 1.5–2 inches (3.8–5 cm), with males typically smaller and more intensely colored/finned than females. They have a lifespan of 2–3 years in good conditions and are hardy swimmers that patrol the mid-to-upper levels of the tank, occasionally exploring lower areas.

Moscow Black Ribbon Fancy Guppies are excellent scavengers, eagerly grazing on algae, biofilm, and leftover food, making them helpful (though not primary) tank cleaners. They’re prolific and relatively easy breeders in stable freshwater setups, often producing large broods of fry that inherit the striking traits with proper selective care.

Beginner-to-intermediate friendly, they thrive in community aquariums with stable parameters (pH 6.8–7.8, temperature 72–82°F / 22–28°C), plenty of plants, hiding spots, and open swimming space to showcase their flowing fins. A varied diet of high-quality flakes, micro-pellets, and occasional live/frozen foods keeps them vibrant and healthy.
