The Bloody Mary Shrimp (Neocaridina davidi var. “Bloody Mary”) captivates with its exceptionally intense, deep red hue—often outshining even the vibrant Painted Fire Red varieties. Unlike many red shrimp that rely on shell pigmentation, Bloody Marys feature a strikingly vivid, blood-red tissue beneath their exoskeleton creating a glowing, jewel-like effect. Both males and females exhibit this rich, consistent crimson coloration throughout their bodies, ensuring every individual delivers that eye-catching, uniform “blood-red” look that makes them irresistible for aquariums.

Under optimal conditions, these hardy shrimp live 1–2 years and breed readily in freshwater setups. To preserve their pure, vibrant lineage and prevent hybridization (which can dilute coloration in offspring), it’s best to keep them in species-only tanks or away from other Neocaridina varieties.

Bloody Mary shrimp are beginner-friendly and prolific breeders in stable freshwater setups. A planted aquarium with plenty of plants, hiding spots, and biofilm-rich surfaces helps them feel secure and encourages rapid colony growth.

As excellent aquarium helpers, Bloody Mary Shrimp actively graze on algae, biofilm, and detritus coating plants, decorations, and glass—helping maintain a pristine, balanced environment.
