Description
These striking Black Poso Rabbit Snails feature a deep, mysterious jet-black to charcoal body and foot that contrasts beautifully with their elongated, ridged dark brown-to-black spiral shells. Their signature long, wrinkled proboscis (snout) gives them that classic “rabbit” look, and their slow, graceful gliding across the tank is mesmerizing to watch.
– Adult Size: Up to 2.5–3+ inches (some individuals grow even larger under optimal conditions)
– Behavior: Peaceful, active grazers and scavengers. They constantly cruise the substrate, glass, driftwood, and plant leaves in search of food, making them entertaining and beneficial additions to the aquarium.
– Diet: Omnivorous – thrives on biofilm, soft algae, decaying plant matter, blanched vegetables (zucchini, spinach, cucumber, kale), sinking pellets, and occasional meaty treats like bloodworms or shrimp.
– Tank Setup: Best suited to mature, stable aquariums with fine sand or smooth substrate, plenty of hiding spots (driftwood, rocks, live plants), and moderate water flow. Minimum 10 gallons for 1–2 snails; add ~2–3 gallons per additional snail to accommodate their size and activity.
– Water Parameters: Temperature 76–86°F (24–30°C), pH 7.0–8.5 (ideally 7.5–8.2), GH 6–15, KH 4–10. Maintain ammonia and nitrite at 0 ppm with low nitrates. They prefer mineral-rich water—supplement with calcium sources if needed for strong shell growth.
Like other Poso species, these snails reproduce very slowly via live birth (not eggs), so they won’t suddenly overrun your tank. They make excellent tankmates for shrimp, peaceful fish, and planted aquascapes. Avoid copper-based medications, as they are highly sensitive to them.
Enjoy these elegant “black beauties” — they add a touch of drama and personality to any Sulawesi-style or community setup!
